Failure for Government over proceeds of crime agency (October 12, 2007)
The Assets Recovery Agency, set up to take money from criminals as part of a government drive against organised crime, is to be abolished.
The setting up of a government agency to seize criminals' wealth was ill planned and unrealistic, an influential group of MPs has said. It was revealed earlier this year that the ARA had cost £65m over four years, and had only seized assets worth £23m. The agency is set to be disbanded from next year.
