Exam Advice For Sources of Law Paper

You should also read the general AS Law exam advice page on the main menu.

For the Sources of Law paper you are expected to answer ONE complete question from a choice of two in one hour 30 minutes hours.

The questions are usually on two completely separate topics from the specification, i.e. one on judicial precedent and one on statutory interpretation.  However sometimes a question may have a mix of topic areas, i.e. legislation and delegated legislation or legislation and law reform.

Therefore you should ensure that you have revised enough topics to cover any permatations that may come up in the examination.

I would advise that you revise judicial precedent and statutory interpretation as one of these is nearly always on the paper.  You should also revise a couple of other topic areas as backup.

Source Material

This examination is a completely different style of paper to the English Legal System paper as you are given source material to work with.

It is vital that you use the source material in your answer as use of the souce material is part of the assesment objective of this unit.

You can quote directly from the source;

"The House of Lords held in Pepper v Hart that ...."

or refer to certain parts of the source material by line numbers;

Source A, lines 4-9 decribes the judgment in Pepper v Hart.

Don't be afraid to lift information directly from the source material as this will gain you valuable marks.
